The pairing that did not take, and what we learned
Six weeks, then a mutual and completely undramatic stop. We include it because roughly a third of pairings end and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Dev wanted to interrogate every claim he read and Clemmie wanted somewhere to put a bad Tuesday. Both perfectly reasonable, and together for six weeks a mild ordeal for each of them: Dev kept sending papers and Clemmie kept feeling examined, and Clemmie kept describing feelings and Dev kept trying to solve them.
What we would like on the record is how it ended. Clemmie wrote a short message saying she did not think it was working and that she thought Dev was great, and Dev wrote back within the hour agreeing and thanking her for saying it first. Both asked to be re-paired and both were, within a fortnight. They still turn up in the same conversation threads and are perfectly warm with each other.
Ada, who reads the ending notes, says the failure mode she watches for is not the pairing that stops. It is the pairing where one person has stopped and has not said so, and the other is left writing into silence. That is the reason we ask for a one-line ending note rather than letting it fade.
It was not personal and it was not a rejection. We wanted two different things from the same twenty minutes a week.
I learned that sending somebody a study when they have told you they are sad is a way of leaving the room.
