The obvious question, and why nobody sighs

A bigger room than usual and a much newer one — eleven of the fourteen were inside their first month. I ran it as a straight round of the questions people had been too embarrassed to type anywhere. It is a format I keep coming back to because the embarrassment is doing real damage: people sit for weeks on a question that takes forty seconds to answer, and the waiting costs them more than the answer ever could.
Where the room started
Apologetic. Four people opened with some version of I know this is a stupid question. Gwyneth apologised twice before she got to the question, which was whether the injection goes in the fat or the muscle, and it is not a stupid question, it is a question with a demonstrable right answer that a nurse should have shown her on a cushion. She had been shown on an orange, quickly, while somebody else waited in the doorway.
I said the thing I say every week. If you have to apologise to ask, this room has failed before you started typing.
What came up
The list, roughly in order of how long people had been sitting on it: whether a missed dose ruins everything, whether you can inject through a bruise, whether the pen has to come out of the fridge first and for how long, whether it matters if you see a small bead of liquid afterwards, whether the needle needs changing every time, and whether it is normal to feel nothing at all in week one.
Most of those have a plain answer in a guide and I said which one. Two of them — the missed dose and the bruise — I pushed back to a pharmacist, not because they are dangerous but because the answer depends on which product is in your fridge and I am not going to guess in a room of fourteen.
Where we left it
Osric, who has been coming since the summer, said the useful closing thing: he had spent the first fortnight waiting for a catastrophe that never turned up, and he could not find a single account online of a boring first week. So he has offered to write one. That is now on the list.
