When the noise goes quiet · call recap

Somebody left this call upset and I want to say why

17 November 202513 attendedHeld by Jonah

A member left this call in tears about twenty minutes in and did not come back to it. I followed up the same evening and again two days later, with her agreement I am writing this up, and she has read it. It is here because the failure is instructive and because a circle that only publishes its good hours is not telling you anything.

What happened

The room was talking about the quiet returning — the negotiation coming back after months of absence, which happens and which frightens people badly if nobody told them it could. Several members described getting it back and coping. The tone was, on balance, reassuring.

For her it had come back louder than before and had stayed. She said so. The next two contributions were both, in effect, mine came back and settled down, said kindly and at some length. She said nothing else, and left the call.

Where I got it wrong

I did not catch it. I was watching the room and not the faces, and the two reassuring replies were warm enough that nothing looked like it was going wrong. Reassurance is the failure mode of a room like this: when somebody says my version is worse, being told that it usually gets better is heard as being told your account is mistaken.

What I should have done is what I do in the recovery-aware circle without thinking — hold the floor for the person who has just said the hardest thing, and ask the room to wait.

What happened next

I rang her that evening. She was less upset than embarrassed, which is often worse. We talked about what she wanted: not reassurance, an acknowledgement that for some people it comes back and stays, and that this is not the same story with a slower ending.

She came back a fortnight later. At her suggestion, the circle now opens with a sentence I say every time: the quiet is not guaranteed to last, and if yours has ended, that is your account and nobody here will talk you out of it.
