When one of us noticed something in the other
Salma noticed the way Izzy had started writing about eating and said so once, kindly, and then stayed. Jonah was involved from the beginning, at Salma’s request.

What Salma noticed was not a number, because there are no numbers in these messages. It was a change in register: a creeping tone of achievement about eating less, an approving self-description that had not been there before, and a couple of comparisons with other people that read as competitive rather than curious.
She did the thing the moderation guidance asks for. She said it once, plainly, in a private message rather than in public. She did not diagnose anything. She did not withdraw afterwards, which is the part people get wrong. And she asked Jonah for advice on how to say it before she said it.
Izzy's response was to be furious for about a day and then to go and talk to somebody, and she is careful to say that the furious day was part of it and not a sign that Salma got it wrong. She is now in ed-recovery-aware, which she describes as the only room where nobody performs about food.
If any of this is familiar, our support resources page describes the kinds of services worth finding, and this guide is the one to read.
I asked Jonah how to say it before I said it. I would not have got the tone right on my own and the tone was the whole thing.
I was angry for a day. Then I made an appointment. Both of those things happened because she said it once and then did not disappear.
