Winning an appeal at the second attempt
Two US members who between them built the working method that became our appeals guide, after Zeb’s first attempt was refused in eleven days.

Harlan had already been through it and lost, then been through it again and won. Zeb was at the beginning. Petra paired them and then largely stayed out of the way.
What they worked out, and what is now written up in insurance appeals, a working method, was that most first refusals are procedural rather than clinical, and that the appeal that works reads like a file rather than a plea. Dates. Documented history. A letter of medical necessity that names the policy's own criteria back at it. The internal review first, then the external one, in that order, with the deadlines diarised.
Zeb won at the second attempt. He is blunt that it took four months and that he is one of the lucky ones, because plenty of members here have done everything correctly and been refused anyway, and there is no method that fixes that.
A plea gets refused politely. A file gets read. That is not fair, it is just what happens.
Four months, two rounds, and I still think it was mostly luck. Do not let anybody tell you a refusal means you did it wrong.
