The ordinary tax and the reasons to be seen today

I run this call in some form every few months because it is the single most useful thing this circle does, and because the membership turns over. Fifteen people. The job is not to catalogue symptoms, it is to teach the difference between unpleasant and urgent, and to make that difference boring enough to remember at two in the morning when it matters.
The distinction, said plainly
Most of what happens in the first months is unpleasant and ordinary: nausea, reflux, burping, constipation, tiredness, a lump at an injection site, headaches. Uncomfortable, sometimes miserable, not an emergency.
A much smaller set is a reason to be seen the same day. Severe pain that bores through to your back and will not settle. Vomiting you cannot break. Signs of dehydration you can no longer drink your way out of. Anything neurological. Anything that frightens you in a way you cannot argue yourself out of. Those are not a room's business and they are not a ginger biscuit's business either.
What came up
Two accounts that did the teaching better than my list. Bay described the pain that wrapped round to her back, the hours she spent deciding whether she was overreacting, and the scan that found a gallbladder problem. Ash, who works A and E nights, described the fortnight he could not keep water down and how quietly and fast dehydration had crept up on somebody who knows what it looks like in other people.
Both of them dwelt on the deciding, not the event. Both had lost hours to it. That is the part I want people to shorten.
