Nausea and eating

The nausea is doing the work for me and I do not know how to feel about that

Bournemouth, month five, and I am going to say something out loud that I have not said to anybody, including my prescriber.

The two days after my injection I feel too queasy to eat. Not dangerously — I can drink, I am not being sick — but food is off the table and always has been on those two days. And what I have noticed over the last few weeks is that I have stopped minding. In fact I have started slightly looking forward to them.

Because those are the two days where I do not have to make any decisions. There is no negotiating with myself about lunch, no standing in the kitchen at four o’clock, no deciding. The queasiness makes the choice and I get a rest from the whole business of it.

And then last week I moved my injection to a Thursday evening, so that the two quiet days land on the weekend when nobody is watching, and I have caught myself wondering whether I could stretch it to three. And I sat with that thought for a bit and I did not entirely like the shape of it.

So the question I came here to ask was going to be about how to make the best use of the window. And the question I have actually ended up asking is something more like: is this a normal thing to have noticed, and does anybody know what I am talking about?

Oh, completely. I call mine the free days. Two days where the whole thing is switched off and I do not have to have any opinions about food, and yes, I have absolutely engineered my week so they fall in useful places.

Honestly it is one of the parts I like best.

Lula, thank you for writing the second half of that post rather than the first one. That took something.

I want to name what I think is happening, kindly, once, and then stay here with you. You have described relief at not eating, and then a plan forming around getting more of that relief. That is a recognisable shape and one this community takes seriously — not because you have done anything wrong, but because it grows quietly and feels like good management the whole time it is growing.

I am not going to tell you that you have a problem. I do not know that and neither does anybody here. The person who noticed the shape and did not like it is the most useful person in this thread, and I would keep listening to her.

Two things and then I will stop. Say this to your prescriber in the plain words you used here, not the tidied-up version. And if it would help to talk to somebody outside a forum, the resources page lists what is worth looking for. My circle is open too, whether or not you ever want it.

Adding one thing from the symptom side, because it is my circle and it matters here.

Two days a week of not eating much, sustained over months, is not a neutral thing physically even for somebody with no other difficulties. It is where people run into muscle loss, into the fatigue that never lifts, into hair shedding three months later, into the bloods that come back looking untidy. The window is not free — it is just billed later.

So there is a practical version of this that is worth doing regardless of anything else: something that goes down on the queasy days. For most people here that has meant liquid rather than solid, and cold rather than hot. Not a project. Just not nothing.

Vegan, and getting protein in has been a real education. My queasy-day answer is a cold blended thing I make on Sunday in three jars — soya milk, silken tofu, frozen berries, a spoon of nut butter. It tastes of very little and that is the point. I can get one down when I could not look at a plate.

Not a solution to what you are actually describing. Just something to have in the fridge while you work that out.

Yoga teacher, learning to eat before class, and I had a version of your thought about eighteen months ago.

Mine was not about queasiness, it was about how much easier my mornings were when I skipped breakfast. Entirely reasonable-sounding. It took a friend saying you talk about food like it is admin you have got out of for me to hear it.

I did not have a crisis and nothing dramatic happened. I did have about four months of noticing, and it was worth every bit of the discomfort of noticing.

I have read Jonah’s reply about six times and my first reaction was to want to explain that it is not that, and I notice that is my first reaction to most things.

It might be a bit that. I do not think it is all that. I have a history I have not talked about on here, from my twenties, and I would have said that was long finished, and reading the words relief at not eating written down by somebody else has been quite a Thursday.

I have not moved my injection back. I am going to. And I have got an appointment on the ninth.

That is a lot to have taken in on a Thursday and you have handled it with a great deal more grace than most of us would.

The wanting-to-explain is not a character flaw either, for what it is worth. It is what everybody does when something lands close. I would only say: the ninth is a good move, and the plain words are the ones to bring.

I will be around before then and after. There is no version of this where you have to manage it in one conversation.

Journalling daily since week one, and I am mostly here to say that I recognised myself in the original post and not in a comfortable way.

Going back through mine tonight to see how many times I have written the word easier about a day I did not eat. I suspect the answer is a lot.

Coming back because I have been thinking about my reply all evening and I would like to change it.

Free days. I have called them that for a year and nobody has ever asked me why they need to be free, or what it is I am getting a break from. Reading this thread I do not love the answer I have got.

Not going to make a thing of it in Lula’s thread. But I have joined the other circle and I will say it properly there.

Facilitator note — Tomás

Facilitator note — Tomás. I hold this circle and Jonah holds ed-recovery-aware, and I asked him to come into this thread rather than handling it myself, which is what we do when a conversation turns out to be about appetite in the other sense.

Two things for anybody reading. First: it was said once, in the open, and then he stayed — that is deliberate, and it is the opposite of a private word and a warning. Second: two members are now looking at something they had not looked at, and neither of them was told they had a problem. Nobody in this community diagnoses anybody. We do notice out loud.
